Cybersecurity breakfast meeting
Earlier today, I was humbled to be part of the thought-provoking panel discussion together with industry leaders during the cybersecurity #breakfast meeting organized by Business Ireland Kenya in conjunction with the Ireland Embassy in Kenya at the Park Inn by Radisson.
It was great to connect again with one of the cybersecurity geniuses I know Evans Kahuthu, and interacting with delegates and #diplomats from the Embassy of Ireland.
The panel comprised of Evans Kahuthu – Chief Data Security & Governance, Peter Wanyoni – Senior Risk Associate, Veronica Rose – IT Risk Manager Moderated by Declan Galvin, Head of information and Intelligence WS Insight.
Topic discussion Included:
- Measures SMEs need to take to protect their businesses from cyber-related threats
- Significant threats that SMEs may be unaware about regarding cybersecurity in Kenya
- Recent cyber attacks in Kenya
- Cybersecurity related costs that consumers spend on that’s either completely unnecessary or wasted
- Threshold that SMEs should consider before they seek external cybersecurity support from a professional third-party
Key takeaways:
- Failure to plan is planning to fail
- Watch out for insider threats
- Need for organizational awareness
- Clean your house first (IT asset inventory) before you transfer the burden to another party (Insurance)
- Continuity planning is important
- Cybersecurity should be more than a policy.
